A Quick Overview of the 1st Grade Curriculum
Language Arts
Our language arts program called California Journeys. California Journeys is built on the five key themes of the California Framework and embodies the belief that every student should be empowered and motivated to be a lifelong learner. Those key themes are meaning making, language development, content knowledge, foundational skills, and effective expression.
It provides literature with a purpose and differentiating instruction for meeting all students’ individual needs. This is a strong phonics based program that includes reading and phonemic awareness. During the year your child will be learning and reviewing all consonant and vowel sounds, digraphs and blends, and different word patterns. We will be practicing letter formation, dictation and sounding out words. Each of these skills is an on-going and essential process of your child’s continuing progress in reading, spelling, and writing. This will also be supplemented with a variety of common core language arts activities and lessons like follow up group discussions to literature, writing practice, journaling, and spelling lessons. There will be a balance between fictional stories and informational nonfiction books.
